A painted floor can become slippery from just a few drops of oil or grease being spilt on it, so it is important to address the issue quickly.

You should be able to tackle light stains with a strong detergent, but if the lubricant has been spread around on shoes or tyres, then you may need something more robust. In these instances, and for larger spills, we recommend Watco Bio D, a strong degreaser that’s powerful enough to break down and remove the grease.

Where vehicles are consistently bringing water into your facility, it is unproductive to keep mopping floors. A more efficient way to overcome this hazard is to apply a slip resistant coating, such as Watco Safety Coat. This anti slip two-part epoxy resin contains large finely textured beads giving extra grip underfoot and providing an easy clean finish.

Grit is commonly used to make floors anti slip; however, it can also make them difficult to clean as the mops and floor wipes catch on the sharp grit. Over time, the surface will become clogged with dirt and other contaminants, often making the floor slippery again.

To ensure your floor can be cleaned easily, opt for Watco Safety Coat Hygienic, which contains smaller beads for a finely textured finish. It has been specifically formulated for areas where hygiene and cleanliness are particularly important.

There are numerous options, depending on the level of protection you need.

Watco Safety Grip is ideal for use on external ramps and large step areas, or to highlight step edges and trip hazards. This is sufficient if you just need to protect or repair the nosing.

However, if the step is damaged, you will need to use Watco Firm-Step® GRP Covers or Watco Firm-Step® GRP Edges.

Finally, Watco Safety Tapes are ideal for use on profiled metal such as chequer plates which can become worn from regular traffic, leading to the surface becoming shiny and smooth.

Watco Roof Walkway Matting Advanced can be used on flat roofs to provide a safe route where regular access is required. Maintenance-free with an anti-slip tread and open grid self draining system, the matting provides permanent slip resistance even in areas where water may pool. It can also withstand winds up to 96mph and is compatible with vinyl roofing membranes.

For felt or asphalt roofs, a single coat of Watco Roofsafe will seal and weatherproof most surfaces and provide a tough, slip resistant finish.

Common trip hazards on a concrete floor that you should keep an eye out for at your facility include:

• Holes

• Joints

• Cracks

• Eroded worn areas

Slips and trips are one of the most common causes of workplace injury, accounting for around 40% of all reported injuries. Sometimes a slip or trip can be relatively minor, resulting in a grazed knee or bruising. But sometimes they can cause serious accidents and lead to costly claims, so it is crucial that businesses keep on top of housekeeping and repairs.

Good housekeeping is often the easiest way to keep your floors free from slip causes. Dust mopping and wet mopping a floor once a week, or more depending on the environment, will help to prevent dust, contaminants and debris such as rubber residue from tyres building up on the floor and making it slippery.

Sometimes, a little more effort may be needed to overcome the possibility of someone slipping on your floor. Implementing anti slip solutions, such as anti slip coatings or matting, may be required to minimise the risk.

Concrete flooring prone to heavy and regular contamination such as around machinery, on ramps, in commercial garages and car parks, along production lines or in wash-down areas can present a serious and regular slip hazard if not treated properly.

In these cases, a powerful degreaser may not always be sufficient, so your best option is to apply a non-slip coating to minimise the risk of accidents in areas that are prone to heavy contamination.

Sprinkling grit into a paint can be a quick fix solution when you need An anti slip coating, but you’ll find that this will wear down with usage. For a more durable result, we recommend using an epoxy resin coating, such as Watco Safety Grip, as this will effectively hold the aggregate for a longer lasting finish.

Yes, if you need to carry out repairs during the winter months, Watco Concrex® Sub Zero has been specially formulated for use at any cold UK temperature.

To maintain your anti slip flooring, housekeeping is key. Simply remove any dirt with a stiff broom or light scrubbing machine and a suitable detergent.

Tiles are non-porous so coatings will not adhere to them. However, you can use the Watco Surestep Tiles instead. Made from tough, resin-bonded aluminium oxide they provide a long lasting, gritty finish.

There are a couple of options, depending on the level of erosion and how your trolleys and forklifts bump and rattle as they pass over the rough, worn patches.

To prevent further deterioration of the surface, it’s best to treat the concrete floor with a suitable sealer, such as Watco Universal Sealer Dustproofer which is an economical and effective way to harden porous, dusty concrete.

However, for areas with greater damage, we recommend you use a self smoothing leveller like Watco Flowtop which is perfect for resurfacing an area and will be ready for foot traffic in just 6 hours.

You can improve the adhesion of the tapes, particularly when applying on weak, dusty surfaces by applying a coat of Watco Safety Tape Primer first.

Outside areas are exposed to the elements and can get very wet, meaning they are more prone to damage and can become slippery for both pedestrians and vehicles. So extra precautions are vital.

Make sure you repair any trip hazards such as holes using Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre and apply anti slip coatings to pedestrian and vehicle surfaces. We recommend Watco Heavy Duty Anti Slip Traffic Paint for high traffic pedestrian and vehicle areas.

You can repair a hole quickly and easily with minimal disruption by simply sweeping away any dirt and debris and then filling the hole in with an epoxy resin mortar such as Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre.

It depends on the size of the area affected.

For damaged joint areas of up to 10mm, Watco Floor Joint Sealant can be used to fill cracks and damage.

For joints which are badly cracked, or spalled Watco Concrex Flex has been developed to repair expansion joints and other areas subjected to movement or vibration.
