Carter Retail Equipment Ltd, like Watco, is a UK based company which has been in business since the early part of the twentieth century. They provide their customers with a total solution for refrigerated display equipment and cold storage systems and are widely recognised as one of the world’s leading suppliers in this field.
2004 saw the completion of a state-of-the-art, 140,000 sq.ft. production facility in the Kitts Green area of Birmingham for its refrigerated display case operation. This major £12 million investment houses the latest manufacturing technology and is evidence of Carter Retail’s commitment to its customers.
Carter Retail Equipment Ltd provides many well-known supermarket chains with their refrigeration equipment, including a more eco-friendly range that has been designed exclusively for Waitrose. As part of their development and expansion, Carter Retail were concentrating on increasing productivity, one of their ideas was to segregate the working areas in their factory by colour, using an industrial concrete floor paint.
Carter Retail Equipment’s Works Engineer, John Smart found Watco from an internet search for concrete floor paint and recognised the Watco brand as one they had used before and trusted.
“We have used other brands before, but they were not as long lasting as Watco’s products”
When asked how easy the products were to apply, Kevin Thomas, Production Manager commented “the guys who put together our fridges were able to apply the coatings with no trouble”.
They ordered Concrete Floor Paint and Concrete Floor Paint Anti Slip online from the Watco website and the products were delivered via next day delivery.
As the warehouse is constantly in operation, Carter Retail had to apply the coatings to one area at a time. They used Blue (for work in progress areas), Red (for walkways) and Red and Yellow (areas that needed to be anti slip).
“identifying usage areas in the warehouse with colour, along with other organisational methods, has contributed to an increase in productivity of 50%”.
It was important that some areas were completely non slip, as when the fridges are assembled, a silicone sealant is used which can contaminate the floor, making the area prone to slips. By using the Concrete Floor Paint Anti Slip in Red and Yellow, they have been able to reduce slips and alert workers to the potential risks.
Carter Retail Equipment will continue to improve their warehouse and also have plans to use Watco line marking products to segregate their outside loading bays.
