Payne Shurvell, which opened in Shoreditch in June 2010, is a contemporary art gallery showcasing both emerging UK and international artists. Many of the artists shown have international reputation but are little known in the UK. In May and June of 2012, the German artist Rudolph Reiber exhibited at the gallery. His site specific piece called 'Losing Ground' was to be a highly polished concrete floor which visitors were not able to walk on. The gallery was closed to visitors who were only able to view the piece from the back office. Sealed in a packing crate in the middle of the floor was a painting which the artist had commissioned.
"The contents remained a secret to everyone except the artist throughout the whole exhibition, as if to taunt the viewers and challenge their expectations by making the art inaccessible. "
The gallery was closed for a month whilst the artist, who is also a trained stonemason, chipped away at dozens of layers of paint on the floor of the former industrial unit where the gallery is housed. It was then polished dozens of times until the artist was happy with the surface. A glossy resin was needed to protect the floor, so once this preparation work was completed, the gallery owners searched the internet for a concrete sealer and found Watco, they contacted us for advice on which would be the most suitable product to achieve the desired glossy finish.
They originally considered using Watco Concrete Sealer, but we advised that if the floor is smooth, non-porous and constructed of concrete or stone, using Watco Protecta-Coat (an epoxy polyaspartic resin coating) would be better as it has the required high gloss finish.
Two coats of Watco Protecta-Coat were applied creating exactly the glossy finish the artist wanted. In fact the floor was so successful that the following two exhibitors decided to keep it for their exhibitions, as the high gloss finish fitted in perfectly.
Watco Protecta-Coat is an exceptionally hard wearing two pack resin coating, which will protect your floors for the long term. It cures to a smart gloss finish to enhance the look of your premises.
