Surface Preparation
ConcreteConcrete to be treated must be at least four weeks old, completely dry and free of surface laitance (a weak dusty layer on concrete), contaminants, and poorly bonded old coatings. All traces of grease or oil should be removed with
Watco Concroff Super Safe (or a similar degreasant) and the area thoroughly washed off and allowed to dry. Very smooth concrete or concrete with surface laitance should be etched with
Watco Cemtetch to ensure adequate adhesion. The concrete should be thoroughly washed down and allowed to dry after treatment with Watco Cemtetch.
StoneStone should be dry and free of all loose surface material and contaminants.
Painted SurfacesPreviously painted surfaces should be thoroughly abraded by sanding to improve adhesion and to remove any weak or loose material. A trial area is advisable to test compatibility with previous coatings.
Bare MetalRemove any rust and flaking material by disc grinding or wire brushing. Apply the coating immediately after preparation to the clean metal surface. Grease or oil can be removed using
Watco Concroff Super Safe. Allow the metal to dry before coating.
Galvanised MetalDo not apply the coating direct to galvanised metal surfaces without first preparing using
Watco Galvaprime. Watco Galvaprime is a single pack wash primer which is applied by brush and should be allowed to dry before coating with Watco Ultragrip.
Masking
After preparation, apply wide tape around the area to be coated to obtain neat edges. If using multiple packs divide and mark the area in units of up to 3.5m².
Mixing
Remove all components from the outer bucket. Thoroughly mix the resin with a wide bladed stirrer (e.g. a wooden batten) to blend in any pigment which may have settled at the bottom of the tin. Pour the resin and hardener into the outer bucket (scrape around the inside of the tins to remove any residue) and stir thoroughly until the colour is even. Add the aggregate blend and continue to mix until a uniform slurry is produced. Mixing can be carried out by hand but a drill type mixer may be helpful when using multiple packs. Pot life at 20°C Once mixed, the workable life of Ultragrip is 30 40 minutes. If the mixed components are left in the mixing bucket they will become hot and the pot life will be dramatically reduced.
Application
Apply only in temperatures above 10°C and below 30°C. To obtain a coarse surface with the most slip resistance, pour the mixture onto the prepared surface and use a trowel to spread it over a measured area of up to 3.5m², then use a medium pile roller over the whole area. For best results, roll the coating in one direction only, ideally towards the body in slow straight strokes with reasonable pressure. Avoid over rolling the same area too many times. Ideally, roller perpendicular to the direction of traffic, i.e. across ramps. If this is not practical, roller against the flow of the most vulnerable traffic (i.e. roller up ramps or slopes). Remove the masking tape whilst the coating is still wet.
