A coarse finish designed to provide safety underfoot, inside or out

A coarse finish designed to provide safety underfoot, inside or out

Safety Grip is a tough, anti slip, two pack, 100% solids epoxy resin coating ideal for steps and ramps

Prevent slips on steps and ramps

Steps and ramps can be hazardous areas particularly if they become wet or greasy. It’s essential to do all you can do to prevent accidents on these areas, particularly when they could be carrying or moving a heavy load.

Anti slip coatings are ideal for use on ramps and large step areas, or to highlight step edges and trip hazards. Once you have thoroughly mixed the resin and curing agents to a consistent colour, simply pour the mixture into a shallow tray and apply it to the step or ramp area with a medium pile roller. Sprinkle the anti slip aggregate over the surface and then roll over again to bed the aggregate in.

It's easy to see why Safety Grip is our bestselling anti slip coating

With just one high build coat of Safety Grip you can minimise the risk of accidents throughout the workplace, particularly for wet or oily areas. Maximise safety underfoot around machinery, on steps, ramps or even loading bays, walkways, entrance ways and car parks.

Safety Grip has been through rigorous testing, so we’re confident it will provide you with peace of mind, as well as an excellent anti slip floor. With outstanding test results for adhesion, hardness and slip resistance, it’s easy to see why Safety Grip has been our bestselling anti slip coating for over 40 years.

  • Suitable for concrete, well bonded paint, flat metal, inside and out
  • Heavily textured, glossy finish
  • Coverage: 5m² per unit
  • Cures in 16 hours at 20ºC
  • Easy to apply with a medium pile roller, cut in using a brush

Maximise safety in all areas

We’ve modified our existing Safety Grip formulation so no matter which area you’re looking to cover or the temperature, we’ve got a solution. When you need an anti slip coating in areas that are unheated or outside in colder temperatures, we recommend Safety Grip Cold Cure, which cures as low as 0ºC.

Alternatively, Safety Grip Flex provides exceptional slip resistance and can withstand vibration. This formulation is ideal for areas subject to movement such as around vibrating machinery, or on ramps, mezzanines and balconies. It’s polyaspartic formula also gives exceptional chemical and UV resistance.

Professional results every single time

Formulating paints and coatings that can withstand even the toughest of environments is what our chemists do best. A big advantage of this formulation is it does not need water to make it cure. Instead a chemical reaction takes place after the base and activator are mixed together, which brings about rapid drying. This makes the product suitable for areas where there is poor ventilation, cold temperatures or high humidity.

Surface preparation

Bare Concrete – remove surface laitance, dust and any light dirt or grease deposits using Watco Etch & Clean. Watco Etch & Clean also etches smooth, bare concrete surfaces to provide a key. Flush with clean water and allow the surface to dry. For the removal of heavier deposits of oil and grease we recommend Watco Concroff, again, flush with clean water and allow the surface to dry.

New Concrete – as a guide, new concrete should be left for 8 weeks to dry. The surface should then be prepared using Watco Etch & Clean, thoroughly rinsed and left to dry.

Priming – is not usually required, but for very porous high suction surfaces, such as sand and cement screed, use Watco 4 Hour Epoxy Primer. Concrete should be sufficiently porous to allow the paint to penetrate, so very smooth or power floated concrete is unsuitable unless first primed with Watco Powerfloat Primer.

Painted Surfaces – abrade to remove any weak or loose paint. Check remaining paint is well bonded. Very smooth, glossy paint should be lightly abraded to provide a key. Watco Bio D can be used to remove grease and oil from painted surfaces. Watco Concroff is a very powerful degreaser for contaminated bare concrete, (do not use on a previously painted surface since it can soften paint). A trial area is advisable to test compatibility with previous coatings.

Asphalt – new asphalt must be sound and at least 3 months old. If any residual oils remain, the surface should be washed using Watco Concroff. Painted asphalt should be cleaned with Watco Bio D (Concroff can soften paint), and a trial area is advisable to test compatibility with previous coatings.

Metal – remove any rust and flaking material by disc grinding or wire brushing. Apply the coating immediately after preparation to the clean metal surface. Grease or oil can be removed using Watco Bio D. Allow the metal to dry before coating.

Galvanised Metal – Watco Galvaprime must be used to prepare galvanised metal.

Non-ferrous Metals – for advice, please contact our Technical Department.

Mixing and application

  • Individually stir the resin and curing agent using a Watco Mixing Blade, or a wooden batten at least 25mm wide is ideal
  • Pour the mixed components into the larger outer tin and stir thoroughly until uniform in colour
  • Pour the mixed resin and curing agent into a shallow roller tray
  • Apply the mixed resin and curing agent by medium pile roller (not foam) to a measured area of 5m². A paint brush may be used for cutting in around the edges
  • Immediately sprinkle the anti slip aggregate, uniformly, onto the wet coat to obtain the desired surface finish (total or light coverage)
  • Using the same roller that was used to apply the mixed resin and curing agent, roll over the sprinkled aggregate to bed in. Do not re-charge the roller with mixed resin and curing agent unless very heavy quantities of grit have been applied, since this will result in a loss of slip resistance
  • Avoid washing the surface for 7 days after application In exceptional temperature conditions advice should be obtained from Watco’s Technical Department

Maintenance

Remove dirt with a medium stiff broom or light scrubbing machine using detergents if necessary - Watco Bio D is ideal.

Test results

Test results

Extensive testing is what makes us the most highly qualified paint and repair manufacturer on the market. Our tests cover just about everything you might want to know about a floor coating – how well it bonds to the floor, how durable it is, how well it stands up to scratching and much more.

Our key tests for Safety Grip:

  • Taber abrasion test ISO5470-1: The result is 163mg. (0mg is the highest resistance, 3000mg is the lowest)
  • Excellent slip resistance when wet or oily when tested to BS7976-2 - Safety Grip's PTV value is 69, a number above 36 indicates a low slip value
  • Very good chemical resistance - tested with the most common chemicals
  • Adhesion test ISO2409 : Safety Grip is class 0 (the highest adhesion)
  • Excellent flexibility – Safety Grip Flex measures 8mm on the Mandrel Flex Tester ISO1519 (2mm is the most flexible, 36mm is the least)

Learn more about the tests we carry out and how to read the results here.
Full test results can be found on the Technical Data Sheet.
