Surface Preparation: Concrete and painted surfaces The concrete to be treated must be dry, at least four weeks old and free of any soft surface laitance, contaminants, and not subject to rising damp. All loose material should be removed. Very smooth bare concrete or concrete with soft surface laitance should be etched with
Watco Cemtetch and the area thoroughly hosed off and allowed to dry. Grease or oil should be removed with
Watco Concroff Super Safe (or similar degreasant) and the area thoroughly hosed off and allowed to dry.
Very smooth previously painted surfaces should preferably be abraded to improve adhesion. All poorly bonded coatings should be removed. This product is a high performance epoxy resin which is best applied to a sound concrete base rather than an existing paint, the adhesion of which may be suspect.
Mixing
The tall outer tin contains a tin of Resin and a tin of Activator. Remove these two tins and stir the contents of each thoroughly. Decant both tins into the tall outer tin. The two components should then be very thoroughly mixed together using a wide bladed stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is ideal. Mix for 2-3 minutes until an even colour and consistency are obtained.
Important Once the contents of the pack have been mixed a chemical reaction takes place which causes a rise in temperature and speeds up the curing of the product.
Application Best results are obtained in warm conditions, (minimum 15°C). On horizontal surfaces apply by medium, pile type roller (not foam) in one coat. Immediately scatter the PVA flakes onto the wet epoxy resin coating. Take a small handful of flake and gently throw it in the air at a distance of approximately 1 metre from the surface. Allow it to settle naturally. There are sufficient flakes to virtually obliterate the coating, but we would suggest that the most attractive finish is probably achieved with a sparser application. If you do apply the wrong amount of flake and want ‘to start again’, just roller over the flakes in the wet coating. A fresh application can then be made.
