Surface PreparationSurfaces should be free from oils and previous coatings. Timber should be dry and absorbent at the time of application. The moisture content of the timber should be below 15%. Very new timber may benefit from a light sanding before application.
Clean surfaces of dirt, algae and lichen using
Watco Decking Cleaner. Grey and weathered wood can be restored to its original colour with
Watco Decking Restorer. Heavy contamination may be hosed away with clean water, or pressure washed provided the decking is not damaged in the process. Allow to dry before applying Watco Decking Oil. No priming is necessary.
Application
Do not apply at temperatures below 5°C, or if the timber is frozen or wet. Stir well before use. Apply by brush at the rate of approximately 10 to 12m² per litre. One coat is normally all that is required. A second coat may be applied, after 3 to 4 hours, if a deeper colour is required. Watco Decking Oils may be spray applied at low pressure although this is likely to give a less satisfactory result. Do not spray in windy conditions and protect surrounding surfaces. Eye protection must be worn when spraying.
If using Watco Decking Oil to colour wood before applying other coatings such as
Watco Deckgrip, it is important to wipe all surplus oil off the surface 30 minutes after the last application and then allow the surface to dry for at least 24 hours. Do not apply to all four faces of a decking strip as this would seal in moisture which may lead to rotting. Protect the newly oiled wood from rain for 24 hours after application. The surface will become fully weatherproof after 24 hours.
