PreparationInspect the entire surface to assess the soundness of existing substrates or coatings. Where necessary prepare test areas. All cracks, holes, blisters etc should be repaired before applying the Balcony Coating system. We recommend cracks and floor/wall joints are bridged with
fibreglass tape in conjunction with the first coat of the base coat. Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from all loose debris and contaminants. All fungal growth or moss should be treated with a suitable fungicidal cleaner. General dirt and contamination can be removed with
Watco Bio D, a biodegradable solvent free degreaser. No primer is required.
Application
The coating system (base and top coat) should be extended up walls or protrusions by approx 150mm.
Base coat: Do not apply base coat if rain is forecast within 12 hours. Stir contents thoroughly (do not thin). Apply by brush or short/medium pile type roller, working the material well into the substrate. Apply generous amounts with a brush to areas at a higher risk of water ingress (ie cracks, joints and protrusions) and use
fibreglass reinforcement tape. A second base coat is required on vulnerable areas and over the fibre reinforcement tape.
Each coating of base coat should be allowed to cure for at least 8 hours and a maximum of 7 days before applying the next coat.
Top coat: Preferably apply by short/medium pile roller, ensuring full coverage of the base coat. Empty and scrape the contents of the resin and curing agent tins into the outer tin, and stir thoroughly with a
Watco Paint Mixer or wide bladed tool . Pour the mixed contents into a shallow tray before application: do not apply directly from the mixing vessel.
One coat of top coat is normally sufficient, but a second coat can be applied after 3 to 4 hours if desired. If a second top coat is going to be applied, do not apply grit to the first top coat. If a slip resistant surface is required, scatter the grit provided evenly over the surface of the wet top coat, at a rate of approximately 0.7kg (contents of the tin) per 10m². Grit is recommended for areas likely to become wet in use, and may not be required over the entire surface depending on the desired result. Do not roller in the grit.
Allow the top coat to cure for approximately 16 hours (at 20°C, longer at lower temperatures) before trafficking.
